High Energy Emission from Agn and Unified Schemes

چکیده
Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are now known to be strong γ-ray emitters. After briefly describing AGN classification and the main ideas behind unified schemes, I summarize the main properties of blazars (that is BL Lacs and flatspectrum radio quasars) and their connection with relativistic beaming. Finally, I address the question of why blazars, despite being extreme and very rare objects, are the only AGN detected at high (E > 100 MeV) energies, and touch upon the relevance of TeV astronomy for AGN research. 1 Active Galactic Nuclei Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are extragalactic sources, in many cases clearly associated with nuclei of galaxies (although in the most distant objects the host galaxy is too faint to be seen), whose emission is dominated by non-stellar processes in some waveband(s) (typically but not exclusively the optical). One important feature of AGN is Invited Review Talk at the Vulcano Workshop Frontier Objects in Astrophysics and Particle Physics, Vulcano, Italy, May 1998 Radio Loudness Optical Emission Line Properties Type 2 (Narrow Line) Type 1 (Broad Line) Type 0 (Unusual) Radio-quiet: Seyfert 2 Seyfert 1

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies
We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...
متن کاملAgn Models: High-energy Emission
Astrophysical models for the high-energy emission of blazars are reviewed. Blazars ejecting relativistic radio jets at small angles to the line-of-sight are the only type of active galactic nuclei (AGN) discovered above 100 MeV. The γ-rays apparently originate in the jets which explains the absence of γ-ray pair creation attenuation. The bulk Lorentz factor of the radio jets is much smaller tha...
متن کاملUnified Schemes for Radio-Loud Active Galactic Nuclei
The appearance of active galactic nuclei (AGN) depends so strongly on orientation that our current classification schemes are dominated by random pointing directions instead of more interesting physical properties. Light from the centers of many AGN is obscured by optically thick circumnuclear matter, particularly at optical and ultraviolet wavelengths. In radio-loud AGN, bipolar jets emanating...
متن کاملGamma-ray Emitting Agn and Unified Schemes A
Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are now known to be strong γ-ray emitters. After briefly describing the different classes of AGN and the basic tenets of unified schemes, I discuss the role of blazars (that is BL Lacs and flat-spectrum radio quasars) as γ-ray sources. The main properties of blazars and their connection with relativistic beaming are then summarized. Finally, I address the question o...
متن کاملUnified Schemes and the Two Classes of BL Lacs
I briefly summarize the main tenets of unified schemes of BL Lacs and low-luminosity radio galaxies, discussing in particular the evolution of this field after the Como 1988 meeting. I also examine some of the open problems and complications of the simplest scheme. Finally, the question of the existence of two classes of BL Lacs and our related change of perspective in the past few years are al...
